Frank Langella stars in Andrew Wagner's adaptation of the acclaimed 1999 best-seller by Brian Morton. Langella plays Leonard Schiller, a once-celebrated author who is gradually working towards completion of the novel that has occupied his life for nearly a decade. Apparently, Schiller, gradually slipping into literary obscurity, has given up on the desire for success that had once characterized his literary career. Now an ambitious graduate student, Heather Wolfe, played by Lauren Ambrose, writing her dissertation on Schiller, convinces him that she can use her thesis to regenerate his popularity and the rediscovery his earlier work. At the same time Leonard has to deal with his daughters own discontent and her decision to begin dating a former boyfriend, Casey (Adrian Lester), of whom he disapproves. When he is least expecting it Leonard feels his entire world turned upside down. From his familial relationships to the security of his writing to his own physical vitality Schiller must confront his past decisions, come to terms with his regrets, redefine his work and prepare with dignity for the twilight of his life.
