Grace Hazlett, reeling from the brutal discovery of her husband's adultery, takes their young son Adam to move back to her old family home. Her mother Isabel, now widowed, is a busy GP and set in her own ways. Home, as Grace discovers, is not always so sweet... In the midst of this emotional turmoil, Grace, who is an experienced criminal psychologist, is asked by the police to determine the guilt of innocence of Julian Latimer, a man who has killed his wife, but repeatedly claims he has no memory of the event... As he and Grace duel over the truth during several charged, tense encounters, Grace finds her own marital experience disconcertingly echoed at every turn. She begins to lose the vital objectivity any psychologist needs, which ultimately will endanger not only her judgement - but both their lives.
