This programme takes a look at the some of the many locomotives operated by the Southern Railway until nationalisation in 1948. The Southern was perhaps the most innovative of the four railway companies at the time, with many famous examples surviving into preservation. Featured in the programme are the O Class - South Eastern and Chatham Railway No. 65, Schools Class 30926 4-4-0 Repton, Schools Class 928 Stowe, Battle of Britain Class - streamlined 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives - 34081 - 92 Squadron, City of Wells 34092, A1 Class Stepney - London Brighton and South Coast Railways 55, A1 Class Fenchurch 672, 1618 U Class Mogul 2-6-0 locomotive, Eddystone West Country Class 34028, as well as examples of electric and diesel locomotives.
