Kyoko (Jun Yoshinaga) is a 16-year-old girl falling in love with the boy next door, Kaito (Nijirô Murakami). She is also coping with the terminal illness of her mother, finding solace in the tranquil waters surrounding their island community. Kaito, too, is confronted with death and family turmoil - he finds a dead body on the beach and is overwhelmed by the confusion its mystery brings, taking it out on his struggling single mother. As the mysteries of life, love, sex, and death intertwine and unravel, together Kaito and Kyoko will journey into adulthood. Award-winning director Naomi Kawase weaves together a poignant and moving story that echoes the ebb and flow of life on this subtropical island where traditions about nature remain eternal.
