Synopsis:
Collection of documentaries exploring the use of tractors from the origins of the machines in the 1920's to the present day.

Tractors at Work
Richard Sturdey visits Salop Steam Rally at Onslow Park and shows us some of the more unusual machines from the 1920's in action, including a 1927 Caterpillar and a Huber and Runeley, also from the US. In the next programme Richard Sturdey continues to describe the attributes of some of the vintage working farm machinery in action at the Salop Steam Rally. Today's machines include 1920's and 30's Nuffield, Caterpillar, International, Mogul, International Crawler, and the Fordson Super Major with a combination of propane gas and diesel powered engines. In the final programme from the Salop Steam Ralley, Richard Sturdey looks at the vintage big-boys machines designed for tractor-pulling ie peforming under extra loads. Tractors at work include Leyland, Fordson, Nuffield, Livery, Allis, Lance, Bulldog and Case.
Working Tractors
The first programme finds us in Sussex watching vintage tractors from the 1930's and 40's hard at work, still doing real jobs on the farm mowing, ploughing and hedgecutting. Machines include Fordson, Massey Ferguson, David Brown, Nuffield and Marshall. Back on the farm in the second episode with some more 1940's tractors, this time they are ploughing, drilling and muck-spreading! Machines include those made by Case, Ford, Fiat, Claas, John Deere and Leyland. The final on the farm programme looks at some of the powerful tractors of the 2nd half of the 20th century, working in the fields. Manufacturers include John Deere, Fendt, Ford, New Holland, Massey Ferguson, DOE, Challenger, Lamborghini and Marshall.
David Brown Tractors
The first programme features the story of David Brown Tractors a key name in British Tractor history - from their early beginnings through to the 1960's. We then pick up the David Brown story in the 1970's in the second installment, when the use of these well-loved tractors expanded from working on the farm, to the production of industrial models for use on the highways. We look at a number of models hard at work in a variety of situations. In the final installment of the David Brown story, we come up to date, with numerous purchasers, including CASE IH, and the subsequent development and production of new machines.
Leyland Tractors and Farming Moves Forward
In the first programme, we look at working machines from another well known British firm Leyland Tractors. Leyland had their heyday in the 1970's, but originally grew out of Nuffield Universal, which was the first tractor launched by Morris Motors in 1948. We then conclude the Leyland Tractor story, looking at their final years during the 1970's, before the company was sold off in 1982. The final programme looks at some of the engineering developments in the 21st century in order to ensure farming methods keep moving forward. We see some of machines employed in removing hedging and spreading slurry.
