Strange Culture tells the story of Steve Kurtz who wakes up to find his wife dead of a heart attack. Like her husband, Hope Kurts was a founding member of Critical Art Ensemble (CAE), "a collective of five artists dedicated to exploring the intersections between art, technology, radical politics, and critical theory". Steve practiced Bio Art, a form of installation art based on biotechnology experiments. Arriving at his house, local police panicked at the sight of paraphernalia more commonly associated with the cultivation of chemical weapons and contracted the FBI. What followed was a surreal nightmare as Kurtz is detained as a suspected "bioterrorist" and dozens of federal agents sift through his work and impound his computers, manuscripts, books, cat, and even his wife's body, forcing him to come face to face with the very subject of his art: the brave new world of ideological science, corporate capitulation, and Patriot Act paranoia.
