- At the Kofukuya (House that sells happiness), a group of women recount turning points in their lives, the day before all prostitution is about to be banned in the city. Shimako, hopelessly in love with a drug addicted Yakusa gangster. Kimiko, who dreams of escaping the brothel for marriage with a poor but decent man. Shigeko who just seems stuck in a life she doesn't know how to leave. And Naoki, obsessed with breaking the brothel record, for no apparent reason.
