Super Strange - Super review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert
30/11/2011

This was a fairly enjoyable film but not quite what I expected. Most people know Rainn Wilson from the American Office and he is very good in a lead role. The film has a few gruesome scenes in it which wasnt expected. The story line is good and all the actors do a sterling job. Although nothing like it , it reminded me a little of Scott Pilgrim in feel but somewhat more bloody.

Super review by Melissa Orcine - Cinema Paradiso

‘Shut up crime!’ says The Crimson Bolt, a vigilante superhero that goes around and whacks people with his trusty weapon of choice – a pipe wrench. In the indie movie ‘Super’, Rainn Wilson plays Frank D’Arbo who turns into the made-up superhero-sans-superpower The Crimson Bolt after his recovering junkie wife Sarah (Liv Tyler) leaves him for Jacques (Kevin Bacon), a strip club owner who hooks Sarah back to drugs.

All right, The Crimson Bolt has sorted his priorities but he needs weapons. In comes Libby (Ellen Page), a comic book clerk who knows a thing or two on super-heroics. She then convinces The Crimson Bolt to make her his sidekick, code name Boltie, and together, the dynamic and maniacally violent duo punishes crime and crime-doers, and even tries to rescue Frank’s wife too.

‘Super’ is written and directed by James Gunn , an indie auteur who considers blood, gore, violence, and lots of pain as his calling card. Vigilante heroes are insane in regular people standards because instead of fighting their demons in a discreet way, they have to parade themselves in spandex costumes and masks. Frank treads a fine line between sickly sweet husband and demented human being, especially since he got his inspiration to become a superhero from a Bible-toting Jesus Freak of a TV character dubbed The Holy Avenger. Now it’s more than personal – it’s holy business!

Ellen Page as Boltie is a sexy yet scary depiction of a girl who’s obsessed with violence. She may not have all the martial arts and gun skills but Boltie still packs a bloody wallop. Of course, nobody does sleaze better than Kevin Bacon. Although touted the villain in ‘Super’, it’s hard to deny that he’s got an affable charm even if he plays a total creep.

‘Super’ is definitively not for the fainthearted.
