It is 1607; India is under the rule of the Mughal Empire. Khurram, the son of the Emperor wishes to marry his beloved Arjumand. He has his father's blessing, and is given the name of Shah Jahan (Zulfikar). However, his scheming stepmother Nurjahan forbids it plans a sinister plot to kill him. Khurram and Arjumand flee to the mountains. Khurram is declared King after his father passes away and Nurjahan is arrested. However, after Khurram goes to war, a pregnant Arjumand is on her deathbed. Khurram builds a monument of love for his wife (which has become one of the most spectacular buildings in the world). As years go by, a war breaks out between his sons who throw him into a prison cell that overlooks the Taj Mahal - where he dies a lonely man, holding the memory of Arjumand close to his heart.
