When her abducted son finally returns home after five years, Gail Carlson feels as if her prayers have been answered. However, her nightmare is far from over when she is confronted with the emotional and mental trauma her son has endured. Gail's estranged ex-husband kidnapped his own son and spent five years on the run, moving from trailer park to cheap motel, always staying one step ahead of the authorities. Abused and neglected, young Andrew is finally set free after his father apparently has grown tired of treating his own flesh and blood like an animal. Intellectually and emotionally stunted, and lacking all social skills, the 10-year-old boy bears little resemblance to the cute and funny son Gail used to cherish. Exhibiting almost a barbaric nature, Andrew's unpredictable and odd behaviour has troubling and potentially dangerous consequences to all those around him. As the boy's adjustment to life as a normal 10-year-old is met with failure, Gail decides to give up her career and family to help her son learn - and to learn to love again.
