Filmmaker, artist and cultural activist, Andrea Luka Zimmerman is the first director to be shortlisted for both the Grierson and the Jarman Awards. Her films function as an interlocution in the ongoing social, economic and political dialogue that exists around us. "Taskafa: Stories of the Street" (2013) is a film about resistance and co-existence told through the lives of the street dogs of Istanbul, featuring text and narration by the late, great John Berger. "Estate, a Reverie" (2015), celebrates a community's resilience in the face of the demolition of their East London housing estate. Filmed over seven years and signalling the passing of the utopian promise of social housing, Estate asks how we might stand firm and in doing so presents a spirited celebration of extraordinary everyday humanity.
