Bernard Sprat (C.Thomas Howell) is a struggling actor about to make his big break - he's been cast in a cereal commercial as "Sir Strawberry". Just as the cameras are about to roll, the producer rushes on set and fires Bernard. The producer, it is revealed, has just read "Victim of Love", the new kiss-and-tell book by Laura Pavot (Ally Sheedy). Laura, Bernard's ex-wife and more recently mistress of the now deceased Hubert De Varenne, a famous French politician, falsely accuses both men of beating her. As a result of the book, an immediate bestseller, Bernard is unable to find work and must endure harassment by strangers calling him a 'pervert' and 'wife beater'. He appeals to Laura for some compassion, to publicly retract her allegations of martial abuse. However, Laura is about to become a media star, and she's not about to give it up for anyone, especially Bernard.
