Based on true events Texas Killing Fields is a crime thriller in which two homicide detectives, Mike Souder (Avatar’s Sam Worthington) and Brian Heigh (Jeffery Dean Morgan), on the case of a serial killer who is dumping bodies on a patch of marsh land known as the “Killing Fields”.
As with almost every crime thriller Texas Killing Fields has a rather dark and depressing overtone, however unlike any crime thriller worth its salt it lacks any other definable characteristics. The plot is a fairly standardized story with enough intrigue and disturbing moments to carry you through to it’s completion; the characters are also fairly unimaginative and barely exist beyond the most simple of levels: their lives offer little for the audience to connect with and are in fact rather dour and depressing themselves, causing them to simply to merge with the overall atmosphere of the movie.
Along with Worthington and Morgan Texas Killing Fields boasts the rather insipid talents of two of Hollywood’s previous go-to girls, Jessica Chastain and Chloe Grace Moretez; both of whom play equally familiar characters as their male counterparts.
These unimaginative characters and plot coupled with the depressing tone of the piece as a whole have left Texas Killing Fields as a rather dull and uninspiring 100 minutes.
