Almost universally accepted as the group who defined pop and rock music as we know it better and more conclusively than any other act before or since, The Beatles had, of course, many strings to their bow. But head and shoulders above any of their other talents and skills was the quite incredible songwriting genius of Messrs Lennon and McCartney. Even before the boys had signed to EMI Records in 1962, John and Paul were creating the finest songbook ever composed in this idiom, a joyous body of work that would not only delight the world but would equally define modern music and provide a template for generations to come. This film investigates and discovers the story of The Beatles via their own music and in so doing reveals, in a way previously undocumented, just how this unlikely collective came to write the songs that made the whole world sing.
