A moving drama based on the Swedish ambassador Harald Edelstam life and his struggle to help refugees in Chile during the military coup in 1973. 1972 to enter Harald Edelstam (Michael Nyqvist) his post as Ambassador of Sweden in Chile. He takes the open position of the elected socialist president Salvador Allende and is involved in several of the country's social projects. But one day everything changes. The military, led by General Augusto Pinochet, Allende plunges and starts a bloody hunt for their political opponents. Hundreds of activists taken to the National Stadium in Santiago, where they tortured and executed. At the risk of his own life exploits Edelstam its diplomatic powers to the limit and the issue of political asylum to threatened activists. But the controversial diplomat play for high stakes. Amidst the chaos begins Edelstam also a love relationship with the young activist Consuelo (Kate del Castillo).
