In the Italian campaign of 1944, a diverse group of US soldier live out the final years of the war together. Fairchild (Wendell Corey) is an idealistic soldier who doesn't believe in killing and struggles with the brutality of the war. Preacher (Don Taylor) is a religious bigot whose narrow-minded view of life doesn't allow for shades of grey. Preacher's distaste for gambling and alcohol, however, does not extend to killing the enemy. Dooley (Mickey Rooney), an inveterate gambler who runs a floating crap game up and down the Italian front, just lives for his next card game. Forced together, their different approaches to life cause conflict between the three men.
