Aminata Diallo (Aunjanue Ellis), the daughter of a jewelry maker and a midwife, is kidnapped at the age of 11 from her village Bayo, near Segu in West Africa. She is forced to slave traders, to walk along with hundreds of others, days chained to the sea. After a months-long, terrible journey across the Atlantic, she arrives in South Carolina. Awaits her new life as a slave. Because of her youth and intelligence she soon learns English, and Aminata walks her way through the American Revolution through New York, the isolated retreat Nova Scotia and the treacherous jungles of Sierra Leone, before she can finally meet her freedom in England in early 19th century.
