Vojtech Jasny's stylised, surreal satire is one of the most gloriously absurd and visually inventive films of the Czechoslovak New Wave. A travelling circus and its magical feline mascot arrive in a provincial Czech town, unleashing mayhem as they expose the virtues, vices and desires of its unruly inhabitants. Part colourful modern fairytale, part pointed political metaphor, the film was promptly banned after the1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. This unique, comic fantasy is now restored in all its vibrant glory.
