Forced to resign from his cabinet post as a result of politfeal intrigue, Minister James Morton (John Hurt), is hastily dispatched to Brussels as British European Commissioner. The move puts added strain on Morton's already ailing marriage as his wife Isabelle (Alice Krige) decides to remain in London alone. Shortly after his arrival in Brussels, Morton is pre¬sented with a seemingly disappointing portfolio of Industry. Things do improve with the arrival of the alluring yet formidable Commissioner for the Environment, Helena Noguentes (Rosana Pastor), who offers some dangerous diversion. As events unfold it becomes clear that there is in fact an intricate tangle of lies and deceit stretching internationally, and Morton and his team are caught right at the centre.
