This volume contains four of Chaplin's legendary early films as follows:
Work Charlie is an assistant to a painter and paper hanger. The painter hitches Charlie to the front of the work cart and uses him like a horse to tow them from job to job. Once they arrive at the house they are scheduled to wallpaper that day, Charlie is used further to hold up scaffolding, but gets distracted by a pretty girl and the boss falls into a bucket of paste. The man of the house is have problems with the stove and his wife, who is being wooed by a Frenchman...and shots ring out! Charlie, being stirred to action gives all the men a face-full of paste and, as they all run into the kitchen, the stove explodes.
A Woman Charlie is back in the pack, and has managed to make two enemies. One is a man who left his wife and daughter asleep in the park to follow a young lady. The other is a man who thinks he's won the same young lady. Charlie ruins both men's chances with the girl. The deserted wife and daughter awake and invite Charlie home with them for dinner. While dining, the other two men arrive to find Charlie, who proceeds to hide upstairs. Charlie dons women's clothes and attempts to escape...only to have the two men clamoring for his attentions. Mayhem breaks loose and Charlie's secret is revealed and he gets slugged.
The Bank Charlie is a bank employee and feels quite important, but once he exits the vault he's carrying a bucket and mop...he's the janitor. He proceeds to cause havoc with his trusty mop and broom, and discovers a package with a love note attached. He mistakes it for his, as he and the cashier have the same name. He makes advances to the girl the package is from, but is rebuffed. He dreams that he thwarts a robbery, rescues the girl and saves the bank. He turns to kiss the girl but wakes up to find himself kissing his mop, and the girl kissing the cashier.
Shanghaied Charlie is hired by a ship's first mate to get three men to fill out his crew, and with the aid of a mallet, Charlie does just that. Unfortunately, Charlie gets the mallet on the head as well and finds himself as the assistant cook on sailing the rough seas. The captain and owner of the ship plan to blow it up for the insurance money, but are unaware that the captain's daughter has stowed away on board. Charlie rescues the girl and throws the dynamite overboard and into the lifeboat that the captain and owner were attempting their escape in.
