This volume contains four of Chaplin's legendary early films as follows:
A Night in the Show Charlie, playing "The Pest," is an elegant, bored, and very drunk gentleman who brings a night of horror to a music hall. He can't find a seat that suits him until he finds one next to the lovely Edna (Purviance). He tries to hold her hand but grabs her husband's hand instead. At this moment, Charlie's playing a dual role as Mr. Rowdy, pours beer on Mr. Pest, who then falls asleep in his seat. The night ends when Mr. Rowdy turns a fire hose on the stage, the audience and especially Mr. Pest.
A Burlesque on Carmen Charlie is "Darn Hosiery", a soldier sent by the Army to catch a band of smugglers. When the smuggler's cannot bribe Charlie they attempt to lead him astray by a pretty girl... which is successful. Charlie falls in love with the beautiful Carmen, kills his superior officer and joins the gypsies. Soon Carmen loses interest in him, and departs to the city with a toreador, with Darn on her heels. He finds Carmen and is again scorned. He pulls out a dagger and stabs Carmen, then himself.
Police Charlie has just been released from prison when a fake preacher preaches to him to go straight. The preacher then pockets the money given to Charlie upon discharge from the prison. Charlie meets a burglar he new in prison and agrees to help with a robbery. They have trouble breaking into a house, so Charlie just walks in the front door. The girl who lives in the house has already summoned the police, but is so charmed by Charlie that when the police arrive she tells him he is her husband.
The Floorwalker Charlie enters a department store and proceeds to annoy the employees with his antics. At this very moment, the store manager and his floorwalker are in the process of robbing the store's safe. The floorwalker double crosses the manager and flees with the money, only to run into Charlie on his way out. He and Charlie are look-alikes. The police catch the floorwalker and Charlie is left with the money. By this time the store manager is back in the picture and he chases Charlie around the store in a mad dash to retrieve the money.
