Synopsis:
This volume contains five of Chaplin's legendary early films as follows:

The Fireman
Charlie's blunders give the captain of the firehouse a lot of cause for doubt. A fire breaks out while the captain is away and Charlie answers the call about the fire and forces the distraught owner to come to the firehouse to rouse the other firemen. Finally they arrive at the site of the fire. Meanwhile, the captain's girlfriend's father has set his own house on fire to collect the insurance money...but his daughter is caught inside. Charlie arrives just in time to save the girl and be the hero.
The Vagabond
Charlie plays a poor violinist. He is forced to leave his job and ends up near a gypsy camp where he plays his violin for a gypsy girl who is washing clothes. When the girl spills the wash and is berated by the gypsy chief, Charlie and the girl escape in a wagon. On their way they meet an artist who paints the girl's portrait. Later the artist exhibits the portrait and it becomes famous. A rich woman recognises the girl as her long lost daughter who was kidnapped as a baby.
One A.M.
Charlie plays a dandy who returns home early in the morning after a night on the town. Unfortunately, he has misplaced his key and is forced to climb through a window, getting his foot caught in a goldfish bowl in the process. He then finds his key and enters through the door, but winds up falling on the slippery floor. Charlie has numerous fights with the furnishings and ends up sleeping in a bathtub.
The Count
Charlie works for a tailor, who he irritates with his antics. The tailor, upon finding a regret note for a party in a customer's coat pocket, decides to impersonate his customer, and attend the party in his place. Unbeknownst to the tailor, Charlie visits the same house to see a friend who happens to be the cook. When the house guards approach the kitchen, the cook tells Charlie to leave, and he makes his departure in the dumbwaiter. Charlie ends up at the party upstairs, exposes his boss, and is the life of the party.
The Pawnshop
Charlie has a job at a pawnshop. He gets in a fight with a co-worker and is fired, but appeals for a second chance on behalf of his 11 children...which do not exist. The pawnbroker relents. A crook enters the shop and tries to pawn an umbrella just to get a chance to rob the cash register, which fails. The crook then pretends he wants to buy the shop to get another chance. Meanwhile, Charlie is hiding in a trunk after another violent fight with his co-worker, and spies the crook trying to open the shop vault. Charlie jumps from the trunk, knocks out the crook, and wins the pawnbroker's daughter in the process.
