Bulgaria - for many a popular travel destination with many beautiful beaches on the Black Sea. For some GDR citizens until 1989, however, it was also a country with long borders with Yugoslavia and Turkey. Escaping these borders seemed possible despite barbed wire and security. How many people tried to flee from the GDR via Bulgaria to the West until 1989 in order to lead a self-determined life in freedom and democracy is still unknown. The exact number of those shot by Bulgarian border guards trying to escape is also unknown. The fates of 20 GDR citizens, who paid for their desire to escape the SED dictatorship with their lives, have so far been researched with the help of Bulgarian historians in the archives of the Bulgarian State Security. The documentary by Freya Klier and Andreas Kuno Richter tells four escape stories, only one of which was successful - the others ended in long prison terms in Bulgaria and the GDR, or even death. The film focuses on a country in which the process of dealing with the communist dictatorship has barely begun, as the filmmakers repeatedly experienced during their filming on site.
