The battle of Kursk took place in 1943, when the Germans attacked the Soviet army with a force of 900,000 men, 2,700 of their most fearsome tanks, 10,000 artillery pieces and 2,000 aircraft. Codenamed "Operation Citadel", the attack was planned to avenge the disaster at Stalingrad.
