Sentenced to 40 years in one of Tennessee's toughest prisons for armed robbery at the age of 18, young George Lee Martin (Gbenga Akinnagbe) takes up boxing as a release and quickly becomes known as "The Hammer". With his country songwriter best friend Doc (Jackson Rathbone) and his transgender cellmate Crystal (Shawn-Caulin Young) in his corner, George's undefeated reputation spreads beyond the prison walls to coaches in the 'free world'. Former heavyweight champion John Tate (Jean Pierre Augustin) takes on George during a prison Friday Night Fight as a workout, but George knocks him out in less than a minute and garners the attention of the US Olympic coach. In 1984 George is offered the ultimate opportunity, his freedom in exchange for a place on the U.S. Olympic team and the chance to win gold for his country. George shocks everyone by turning it down, sending Doc and Crystal on a journey to discover the true meaning of loyalty and love. 'The Hammer' is the remarkable true story of a prison boxer who turned down freedom, fame and glory for something far bigger.
