Set in Donegal during the Great Famine of 1846, 'The Hanging Gale' follows the fortunes of the Phelan family. Lord Hawksborough appoints an English Land Agent who makes a poor impression with the locals who try to lynch him. Sean (Joe McGann) and Conor (Mark McGann) Phelan save him from certain death but this doesn't stop the Agent's animosity towards the Phelan family. The brothers are torn between non-violent protest and bloody revolt. When the crops become riddled with blight and the family faces sure starvation they take the law into their own hands.
