Oliver Schmitz directs this South African drama starring Steve Coogan and Garion Dowds. When 19-year-old white prison guard Leon Labuschagne (Dowds) guns down seven black men in a seemingly racially motivated attack, he is assigned British-born lawyer John Weber (Coogan) to defend his case. As Weber starts to look deeper into Labuschagne's past, he learns the gruesome truth of what being a prison guard on death row actually means. Given very little training, the guards must watch over the inmates, often forming friend-like bonds, before leading them to their death at the gallows. As Weber argues diminished capacity, taking the stance that his client has been psychologically traumatised by his job, he also fights to rid the country of the death penalty once and for all.
