After years of unspeakable acts and countless unlawful deaths, Dachau concentration camp was finally liberated by the Rainbow Division of the US Army on April 29th 1945. The disbelieving and stunned division rescued some 32,000 prisoners and captured close to 300 guards. The sickening sight which confronted the liberating troops brought about "heat of the moment" revenge attacks on the SS camp guards and other camp workers who were party to the inhumane atrocities perpetrated at Dachau. Historical records of that time cite that between 15 to 30 SS guards were killed in these vigilante reprisals, which were perhaps understandable, if not acceptable. Dachau now stands as a ghostly reminder and tribute to those who lost their lives.
