Stephane Grappelli was the quintessential French Jazz violinist, indeed his name personifies the Jazz Violin. This octogenarian maestro captivated the hearts of millions of music lovers throughout the world with his unique Jazz influenced violin playing. In a career that spanned and unbelievable 7 decades, his first professional job was in silent movies in 1923 at the age of 15. He has dueted with classical violinists like Yehudi Menuhin and Nigel Kennedy, recorded with such musical giants as Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson and Miles Davis and even collaborated with renowned singers as diverse as Bing Crosby and Paul Simon but his name will forever be synonymous with the gypsy guitarist Django Rheinhardt and the Hot Club sounds of Paris.
On this DVD, capturing his last performance, Marc Fossett replaces Django Rheinhardt and together their elegant and playful style is in full force at a special performance at the Galway Arts Festival that includes such standards as 'I Got Rythym' 'Sweet Georgia Brown' 'Fascinating Rhythm' 'Lady be Good' and 'Old Man River'. The occasion was a St. Patrick's Day concert and appropriately he is joined by Ireland's leading violinist Frankie Gavin and his group and the fusion of musical cultures and their individual and collective performances are mixed with a special interview that Stephane gave reminiscing about his career, as well as a virtuoso performance on the piano. The final track was a piece of music history as Stephane Grappelli played 'The Kerry Dances' an Irish jig selection and Frankie Gavin played jazz, hence the title Jigs & Jazz.
