Synopsis:
The series "Island" was based on real events that occurred at the beginning of the XX century on the island-leprosarium of Spinalonga, where people who live with leprosy came to live their lives. Unlike other serials (especially Spanish, Turkish, Brazilian), the series "Island" does not offer the fairy tale "dolce vita", but it is the anthem of man's life and power, touching the story of a serious illness and human isolation. "Island" reveals before us the depth of the human spirit, which finds the strength to love, dream and live, even when fate ruthlessly throws in the hardest circumstances.
This is a story that, under the amazing Greek soundtracks, takes us through the beautiful and wild landscapes of Crete and allows us to see the amazing destinies of the islanders from 1939 to the present day. The small rocky island of Spinalonga, located at the same time so close, but so far away from the rest of the world, has always been the embodiment of rejection. But even in this terrible and gloomy environment there is room for human hope, enthusiasm, friendship and love. The series describes the struggle of the leprous Spinalonga for survival and for the best living conditions, and also - in parallel - the struggle of the inhabitants of Plaka against the public stigma that the disease puts upon touching one of the members of the family. It was not by chance that the patient was discharged from the metrics, as if he had never lived, and his marriage was automatically canceled. This series, based on the Christian value system, teaches us to love and compassion for the people on whom society has put a cross. One of the rare cases when the film, and especially the series, surpasses the book in terms of drama, integrity, emotional richness and depth of character characters. Excellent filmmaking work and a great cast of actors, including children and even extras, as well as the natural beauty of the places where the "Islands" were shot, according to film critics, make this series a "phenomenon" of modern Greek television.
