Interesting documentary - The King of Kong review by CP Customer

A fascinating documentary, admittedly on a subject mater that won’t immediately appeal to all, but it has a real personal and honest touch. Gaming may not be to everyone’s liking but at least you can understand the desire to be the best, defeat all newcomers and appear in the Guinness World Records. This is man against machine, or as King of Kong soon discovers the battle between the two heavyweights of Donkey Kong, with Twin Galaxies trying to referee the peace.

I really identified with Steve Wiebe, who unexpectedly kicked up a fuss and storm of gaming politics without really knowing it. A family man with a knack for defeating video games, he comes across as being honest and only trying to have the top score. It was hard not to feel that long time gaming pin up Billy Mitchell, did have some unfair favouritism from the judges. This is highly recommended viewing for those who enjoy documentaries and included is a large selection of extras. Do check out what happened next in the quest for the top Donkey Kong score!

A brilliant little guy battling the odds documentary. - The King of Kong review by CP Customer

In the early 1980s video gaming wonder kid Billy Mitchell set a Donkey Kong high score that has stood for over 20 years. ‘King Of Kong’ follows an assault on the record by Steve Wiebe, an easygoing junior high school teacher from Kirkland, Washington. After a failed musical career and an laid off as an engineering at Boeing, Steve is determined to make his mark on the world and buys himself a used Donkey Kong arcade machine and sets out to beat Mitchells score. Through a combination of patience and determination Weibe eventually gets his high score and mails off a videotape as proof, although that’s just the start of Weibe’s battle.

Even if you don’t like videogames then chances are you’ll still love this superb documentary. Although the basis of the story is about Steve Wiebe trying to break a 25 year old Donkey King high score, the heart of the film is a tale of an outsider versus the gaming establishment and ‘Twin-Galaxies’ a restricted and self-contained organisation in which the judges, rule-makers and staff are also the challenging participants, most of whom seem heavily biased in favour of the highly machiavellian Billy Mitchell.
