Post war Paris sees the beautiful Helen Ellswirth (Elizabeth Taylor) and her father James (Walter Pidgeon) determined to live life to the full in Parisian high society, even though their style of living far outstretches their means of paying. But money, or lack of it, means little to the eccentric Americans as they are caught up in the excitement of Left Bank society, which is where they meet war writer and veteran Charles Wills (Van Johnson). It isn't long before romance blossoms between Charles and Helen, hi is totally captivated, not only by Helen's beauty but also by the Ellswirth's lifestyle. Caught up in a whirlwind of wild parties and gambling, Helen and Charles take the momentous decision to marry although their highlife continues apace resulting in ever mounting difficulties.
