Located in rural 1840's in Scotland, the plot focuses on work and class issues, while telling the story of Gavin Dishart (John Beal), a religious cutlery newly assigned to Auld Licht Thrums' church, and Babbie (Katharine Hepburn), a member of the nobility, who disguises himself as Gypsy girl to freely interact with the local inhabitants and protect them from her guardian, Lord Rintoul (Frank Conroy), who wants to keep them under his control. Initially the conservative Dishart is dismayed by the exuberant girl, but soon comes to appreciate his inner goodness. Their romantic liaison scandalizes the people of the country, and the minister's position is compromised until Dishart's heroism stuns and transforms the hearts of the local inhabitants.
