The lives and loves of Beryl Hennessey (Polly James) and Sandra Hutchinson (Nerys Hughes), two young, single women sharing a flat in Liverpool...Feeling stressed out Carol and Sandra are prescribed tranquillizers by the doctor. Then Carol's father returns from London, to where he ran off five years earlier with a younger bus conductress. Carol and Sandra manage to get Carol's parents reconciled - after a fashion - and feel a sense of accomplishment and calm, so they throw away the tranquillizers. Then they hear that Carol's 16 year old sister Barbara has run off to London with her boyfriend and reach for the pills...The Boswells are in uproar when they learn that their street is to be pulled down for redevelopment and Sandra and Carol begin a protest campaign. Along with Mrs Hutchinson and Carol's family they confront the local councillor - and somehow talk him into submission...
