Embittered and alone after nursing his late mother through a prolonged illness, Michael Keddington (Chad Willett) takes a job working as an orderly in a hospice. Admired by both the staff and his patients, he eventually meets Esther Huish (Vanessa Redgrave), an elderly resident clinging to memories of her past and the choice she made that changed it. Because Esther sees in Michael a younger version of herself, she fears that his hopelessness will result in him losing the one woman who truly loves him for who he is - a wealthy beauty (Marguerite Moreau) who's bound for law school. Esther vows to make appreciate what he has. Through their growing friendship, Michael embarks on a soulful journey that begins with Esther's ruminations on her long-held secret - that of a great love she was afraid to accept when she was a younger woman and has regretted losing ever since. Most importantly, through Esther's dear companionship, Michael begins to rediscover himself, to believe in things he never thought possible, and to find the courage to accept the nurturing, patience, and forgiveness that true love requires. But before his lessons in life, love, and hope are over though, Esther has one precious favour to ask of him.
