As the war Ientered its third year, fear of the Blitz receded and people discarded their gas masks. A period of retrenchment began as Britain settled down for a long, hard slog. Rationing, coupons, digging for victory, land girls and home guard exercises - everybody 'did their bit' for the war effort. By 1943, the majority of women in Britain were engaged in some kind of war work, in uniform, on the land, and in munitions factories. Everyone had to pull together if the war was to be won.
