Josh Millen (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a very bright but somewhat directionless teen, turns 18. He's surprised when his brother Walter Schmeiss (Matthew Modine) shows up on the Millen's doorstep, wishing Josh a happy birthday. Walter and Josh were adopted by the Millens when Josh was 2, after their biological parents died in a car crash. When Walter turned 18 he flew the coop. And this is the first time he's contacted his brother or adoptive parents. He lies that he's married with two kids, but explains to Josh that he's in the storage and transfer business. He asks Josh if he's still plagued by the recurring nightmare he suffered from when Walter was living with the Millens. Josh claims he's not, but in reality he still has the dream often. Walter's philosophy is about the necessity of being "the maker" in any situation. The maker of rules that is. To always have the upper hand and never let it slip away, not even for an instant. He asks Josh if he's interested in coming along on business. They arrive at a huge house, posing as the movers, then drive off with all the occupants' belongings...
