It's been twenty years since Tony Egan's sister Karen left the quaint Irish island of Inis Dara for America. The news of her death is quickly followed by the appearance of her son Chad (Hill Harper) from New York with her ashes, looking for family and clues to his mother's past. The arrival of this stranger into the closed community arouses suspicion and curiosity. Old passions and conflicts are unearthed as Chad tries to piece together the story of his mother's departure with the help of her old friend Brenda (Sinead Cusack) and her ex-boyfriend, Joe Brady (Pierce Brosnan). As Chad tries to fit in with island life he falls for Aislin, Joe Brady's daughter. But with the intense 20 year rivalry between Chad's uncle and her father the romance is thwarted from the outset.
