After the D-Day landings in June 1944, the Allied troops found themselves up against stiff German defensive positions. As a result of the desperate fighting which followed, the German Army was pushed back towards Paris, and the tide of the war was finally flowing in favour of the Allies. This programme tells the story of the mighty battle for the town of Caen, and of the shambles of "Operation Goodwood", one of the great British disasters of the Second World War. Featuring archive footage, informative maps and graphics, and an interview with the Rt Hon Viscount Montgomery of El Alamein CBE.
