Synopsis:
The formidable links of Carnoustie played host to the 2007 Open and provided four days of dramatic golf in one of the most memorable Championships of recent years. Defending champion Tiger Woods was bidding for his third successive Open title as the world's leading players gathered for the 136th Championship. However, he was to be denied matching a record that has stood for more than 50 years in a thrilling tournament. Sergio Garcia had a firm grip on the Claret Jug as he led from the first round deep into the final day, but he faced an unrelenting challenge from a host of young and established players in the battle for the world's oldest golfing title. The course record was equalled, superb shot-making thrilled a sell out crowd and from all parts of the course some of the most remarkable golfing stories were written. Andres Romero, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia all had chances to win throughout a remarkable final day. Every hole seemed to produce a defining moment. Ultimately a play-off between Garcia and Harrington was needed to decide this closely fought title. The packed gallery around Carnoustie's famous closing hole was hushed as it witnessed one of the most exciting finishes to any Open. Carnoustie 2007 will long be remembered as one of the classic Open Championships.
