In a small Norwegian town, 16-year-old Maria (Marie Theisen) struggles through adolescence and sexual awakening as her father, Johannes (Bjørn Sundquist) the stern town priest, works to thwart her natural blossoming. She rebels, but finds some support from church organist Mrs. Tunheim (Hildegun Riise), a woman who sacrificed her personal life for religious devotion. When Marie later learns that her father has had an affair, she then uses this information to fight back against his constraints.
