In the mountainous region of Mestia in Upper-Svanetia, which is a veritable natural fortress tucked away in the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, at an altitude of two thousand metres.
Historical and dance songs (in the form of rounds) are an integral part of daily life, isolated for many years, and guardians of a dialect which is the anarchic deviation of the Georgian language, the Svanes, who are thought to be of Sumerian origin, have perpetuated a unique vocals tradition in Georgia. They are also the only people to play the harp in the whole of Caucasia.
The audience at the "Festival de L'Imaginaire", France, rose as one to salute the finale of the Riho de Mestia Choir whose performance was one of the highlights of the festival and the fourteen songs included:
Murza Beksil, Lajghvashi, Geregil, Djgragish, Shgari da Lashgari, Gau - Gavkhe Mirangula, Thamar Dedopali, Mgavruli.
