A shy psychiatric nurse's unerring belief in fate sets her on the rocky road to love when she seeks out the man who saved her life. Deep in the countryside lies the Birkenhof asylum, an isolated kingdom over which nurse Sissi rules with gentleness and charm. On a trip to the nearby town she becomes the victim of a horrendous road accident. A mysterious passer-by saves her life, but, he disappears without revealing his identity. Armed with only a button pulled from his sleeve, Sissi tracks down her saviour, who turns out to be an ex-soldier and aspiring bank-robber named Bodo. Bodo is not the slightest bit interested in Sissi, but, Sissi is convinced that their chance meeting is the key to her new life. When a bank-robbery goes wrong Bodo is surprised to find that, this time, his fate lies in her hands. Maybe Sissi is right after all: their lives are intertwined and being together is their only chance of survival.
