Part of the new ultra-low budget ‘Mumblecore’ genre of indie cinema, ‘The Puffy Chair’ follows the characters of Josh, his emotionally needy girlfriend Emily and his eccentric slacker brother Rhett as they travel on a two day journey to pick up an purple lazy-boy recliner chair which Josh bought on eBay, and then deliver it to the brothers parents home as a gift for their dads birthday. And what was intended as a laid back road trip soon descends into chaos as the group run into one problem after another. The simple tale of a road trip gone wrong has been done many times before, but what sets this film apart is the great characters, some deeply poignant dialogue and some very funny laugh out loud moments. If you’ve never seen a ‘Mumblecore’ film before, then ‘The Puffy Chair’ is probably one of the most accessible films within the genre, and if you love low key indie films like ’12 and Holding’, ‘L.I.E’, 'Junebug' and ‘Old Joy’ then this should be right at the top of your rental list.
