After losing his bride in a Luftwaffe air raid on London, Squadron Leader Bill Forrester (Gregory Peck) becomes a solitary killing machine. With little thought for his own life, the reckless Forrester is both admired and feared by the rest of his squadron in World War II Burma. Squadron physician Dr Harris (Bernard Lee) is assigned to determine the embittered Forrester's fitness for duty. To break through the nightmare-haunted man's wall of silence, Harris takes Forrester on a visit to a refugee camp where he meets and is immediately attracted to a beautiful Burmese woman, Anna. However during a routine flying mission Forrester becomes trapped behind enemy lines with little chance of escape. Will Forrester's new found love for Anna drive him on to save both himself and his crew?
