In a soft Californian twilight, on a quiet road on the evening of September 30th 1955, a young man in a high-powered sports car was involved in a fatal accident. All such deaths are tragic for the family and friends of the victim, but this tragedy traumatised a generation and took from the world an actor who, although he had only just started out in Hollywood, had already ensured our enduring fascination with the three films he had completed and with his extraordinary and unique talent.
