Over ten hours of murder, kidnap, robbery, smuggling and blackmail in this collection of ten films from the 40s to the 60s, including the recently rediscovered 'Murder in Reverse?' starring William Hartnell; international smuggling in 'The Switch' starring Anthony Steel and Zena Marshall; psychological drama in 'Faces in the Dark' with John Gregson and an unrecognisable Harry H. Corbett in 'Cover Girl Killer'…all fully restored with subtitles.
Murder in Reverse? (aka Query) (1945) Formerly declared lost, this film has now been rediscovered. A dockhand is wrongfully sent to prison for murder, after his wife's lover fakes his own death. The dockhand's beloved daughter has grown up not knowing her true identity. On his release, convinced the man who framed him is still alive, he sets out to avenge his time behind bars.
The Switch (1963) A woman is abducted by a smuggling gang. Some fine vintage cars appear in the film including a sporty Sunbeam Alpine and an elegant Ford Zephyr.
The Sicilians (1964) An aide at theU.S. Embassy finds himself involved with Scotland Yard and the French police after the son of a Mafia boss is kidnapped from London Airport after a trip to France. Shot mainly at Shepperton, the film also features locations in New York, London and Paris.
Jacqueline / The Trial of Madame X (1948) A woman is thrown out of her home by her jealous husband and sinks into depravity. Twenty years later, her criminal lover decides to blackmail her former husband. Desperate to shield her son from her disgrace, she shoots her lover. Her son, now an advocate, who does not know who she is, finds himself defending her, without knowing her background. Based on the 1908 play Madame X by the French playwright Alexandre Bisson.
Faces in the Dark (1960) Richard, a factory owner and inventor, is blinded by an explosion during an experiment on the very day his wife had decided to leave him for her lover. The lovers plot to make the blind husband think he's going insane, in the hope that he will take his own life, however, the blinded man becomes aware of the affair and their plan. He must stay silent to avoid detection, but can he save his own life?
Life in Danger (1959) A child murderer escapes from an asylum on the outskirts of a small country village. While the police begin an investigation, local landowners decide to take the law into their own hands. Meanwhile, a drifter and a teenage runaway have taken refuge in a local barn. As hysteria escalates in the local community, can the killer be found, or will innocent blood be spilt? Filmed in the local area around Shepperton, Middlesex.
The Voice Within (1946) In Northern Ireland, Dennis O'Shea joins a gang of smugglers in order to raise the money to pay for his brother, who is fleeing from the IRA, to move to the USA. However, after he accidentally kills a constable during a smuggling trip, the policeman's dog begins to follow him.
Double Confession (1950) Arriving late at night in a seaside town, estranged husband Jim Medway, (Derek Farr), discovers his wife's dead body in her coastal cottage. As he arrived, he spotted local businessman Charlie Durham, who had been having an affair with his wife, leaving the house. Medway attempts to blackmail the rich entrepreneur or get him arrested, but Durham's homicidal sidekick Paynter, (Peter Lorre), intends to protect his boss by arranging an "accident". Inspector Tenby, (Naunton Wayne), investigates, beginning to suspect that there is a less obvious culprit. Based on the novel All on a Summer's Day by John Garden. Look out for Desert Island Discs original presenter Roy Plomley playing a ticket inspector. Filmed on the Isle of Wight; Bexhill on Sea; Hastings, and St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex.
