It is 1907, and 10 years have passed since the Psammead, (sam-mee-ad) was last disturbed in its sandpit. It's been feeling a little lonely and is quite pleased when the Garsington children turn up. George, Ellie, Philip and Lucy are sent into the country to stay with their formidable Great Aunt Marchmont (Anna Massey), who is a real dragon and hates children. To make matters worse, her housekeeper and her gardener hate children too. No wonder they escape from the house whenever they can. And soon there is another, even better reason for going down to the sandpit. Ears like a bat and a tubby body covered in thick fur, the Psammead, the last of its kind, is pleased on hearing the sound of children's voices...with the power to grant the most marvellous wishes... A series of wonderful adventures begin for the children and the Psammead.
