The Royal Kingdom series looks at the unique relationship between the monarchy and the country, from local tales to events of state, the history, pageantry and the magnificent architecture. Triumph and tragedy often go hand in hand. The New Forest must have felt like a haven for the triumphant Norman invaders in the 11th Century, but it was where William II met his untimely end. Equally, the Isle of Wight is home to one of the happiest of Royal residences, Osborne House, where Queen Victoria and Prince Albert created the epitome of Royal family life. Alongside is Carisbrooke Castle, where a king was imprisoned prior to his execution. In this programme we tour the South and visit the grandeur of Petworth and Arundel as well as the glorious surroundings of the Isle of Wight and the New Forest.
