On November 7th 1917 the Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace in Petrograd (soon to be Leningrad) and the Soviet State came into existence under the leadership of Vladimer Lenin and Leon Trotsky. The revolt swept away Czar Nicholas II and with him every trace of an age old tradition, his ancient empire collapsed under a succession of revolts. The country was plunged into 4 years of civil war. Fighting famine and epidemics caused millions of casualties.
